I strongly prefer painting my nails at home instead of going to a salon because I can do my manicure whenever it’s convenient for me and I can take my sweet time deciding what color I want to use. Also….no pants required! So I’m always on the lookout for nail polish products that I can use myself that will still give me salon-quality results.
I actually had no idea that GelMoment existed until I went looking for a pregnancy-safe gel nail polish. You see, when I got pregnant, I got all nervous about what chemicals I was putting on my body because I didn’t want to accidentally cause any harm to my baby. I was ultra nervous about nail polish and just assumed that I couldn’t paint my nails, so they stayed bare for 5 months before I did a bit of research online!
It turns out there are actually quite a lot of gel nail polishes that are non-toxic, but GelMoment intrigued me because it was the only one I could find that didn’t require a base coat or top coat. And it’s designed to be an at home gel nail polish kit so you can DIY your nails and still look like you went to the salon.
I also discovered that, while GelMoment can be ordered online, it is only sold through independent distributors. And there really aren’t very many in the U.S. right now (less than 400!).
Since I literally didn’t know anyone selling it, I found a random distributor online and ordered through her website. And then eagerly waited for my package to arrive.
So here’s what prompted me to try it out in the first place…
It’s safe to use
GelMoment is non-toxic and it has the added bonus of being eco-friendly and it’s not tested on animals. I love nail polish, but I also love fluffy bunnies and I prefer to buy from companies that don’t hurt them.
The formula boasts an impressive list of ingredients that are NOT included:
- No Dibutyl Pthalate
- No Toluene
- No Formaldehyde
- No Formaldehyde Resin
- No Camphor
- Virtually Odorless
GelMoment is made in Europe, where the FDA requirements are stricter on cosmetics than they are in the U.S.
After researching the ingredients, I decided I felt completely safe using it while pregnant (and any other time too).
It’s the fastest and easiest way to manicure your nails
GelMoment is a one-step gel nail polish, meaning it doesn’t need a base coat or a top coat.
Compare that to what I used to do ever since I started doing my own gel nails…. Base coat, cure, 3 coats of polish (curing in between each coat), top coat, cure. That was 5 coats having to cure them in between every single time. It took for-ever.
So with GelMoment, I found people say they got good coverage in a single coat. But even if I ended up doing 2 or 3 coats of color, that would still be a whole lot less than all 5.
The GelMoment polish cures in 60 seconds with their starter lamp or in 45 seconds with the professional lamp. And since it’s rock hard once that time is up, you don’t have to worry about messing it up when doing your other hand or another layer.
After you’re all set, your manicure is supposed to last up to 14 days (depending on your nail type).
But does the nail polish really hold up to all of the claims?
My first manicure with GelMoment
I actually ended up purchasing the Enrollment Kit because it was on sale for nearly the same price as the Starter Kit and it came with a lot of extra goodies.
That ensured that I would have the following to work with, which I considered the minimum to really try it out properly:
- a metal cuticle pusher
- a nail file and buffer
- cleansing wipes
- gel nail polish
- the 2-finger LED lamp
- gel remover packets
- (and some more stuff)
Step 1 – cuticles
This seems like such a simple step, but I felt like it was worth calling it out by itself because I actually REALLY like the cuticle pusher tool from GelMoment.
It’s super solid (almost heavy) and both ends are sharpened just right. It also came well packaged with plastic tubing covering the sharp bits so it didn’t get ruined during shipping.
Using this tool, I actually felt like I was able to clean up my cuticles all by myself at home better than I ever had before. And since I hadn’t done my nails in 5 months, they definitely needed a bit of work.
So regardless of whether or not everything else was a win or a bust, I’ve actually fallen in love with the cuticle tool haha. It’s the simple things, right?
Step 2 – buff and cleanse
The directions that came with my GelMoment kit mention that this step is super important for the gel polish to adhere correctly. Buffing and cleansing helps remove any oils that can be sitting on top of your nails.
And it’s pretty quick and straight forward. I just lightly buffed the tops of my nails and then wiped them down with a packet of cleanser.
I was able to use one single packet for all 10 nails because the pad inside felt plenty moist to do the whole job.
Then I waited a few seconds for the cleanser to fully dry, which it did pretty quickly.
Step 3 – polishing
Next up, it was finally time to try out the actual gel polish. I chose a dark emerald green so it would be super easy to see how it would hold up afterwards.
The instructions say to roll the bottle between your palms instead of shaking it since shaking the bottle too aggressively can create bubbles. This was a good instruction to know because I had always vigorously shaken gel polish bottles before. And yes, sometimes I had ended up with some tiny bubbles on my nails but never knew it was a result of shaking the bottle.
The gel polish was a different consistency than what I was used to. At first it seemed a little bit thick, but it was really easy to drag down the nail. I was able to quickly get the hang of how to apply thin coats, which is supposed to help with it’s durability.
I also capped the tips of my nails as the instructions said to. So I just dragged the polish over and down the very tip of my nail.
Step 4 – curing
Since I had the smaller, 2-finger LED lamp, I painted two nails at a time and then cured them.
The lamp is super easy to use because you just push the big button to start the light and it automatically turns off at 60 seconds.
I cured 2 fingers at a time on each hand and then cured my thumbs together.
This is where I was skeptical because I have used a lot of gel polish previously and occasionally I would still be able to mush it around after curing.
But to my surprise, the GelMoment color was 100% cured and solid after the 60 seconds was up. Like it was not budging at all!
My husband even came over and started picking at my nails because he was skeptical too and he couldn’t get the polish to scratch or lift up.
One thing I noticed was that two of my nails seemed to experience some shrinkage of the color right at the tips while curing. I think it was because I did not quite cap the nails well enough, so I focused on doing that the right way with a second coat and it seemed to fix the problem.
By the second coat, I felt like I had the hang of it and was able to get really good coverage. And I was all finished after the second coat! I was totally expecting to need 3 coats with such a dark color, but 2 proved to work out great.
How much time it really takes
Pushing my cuticles back, buffing and cleansing all went very quick and took less than a minute.
The 2-finger LED lamp cures the polish in 60 seconds and you can only do 2 fingers at a time (obv). So it takes a total of 5 minutes of curing per coat. Since I did 2 coats of gel polish, I spent 10 minutes curing my nails.
Even so, that is still a lot less time than I was spending on a manicure before discovering GelMoment.
Using the professional lamp would greatly speed things up as it cures the polish in just 45 seconds and fits 4 fingers at a time. So that is only 2 minutes and 15 seconds per coat!!
So using the professional lamp, I bet I could do an entire gel manicure in 10 minutes or less (or even 5 minutes with one coat)!
I have fallen head over heels in love with the GelMoment gel nail polish.
It really was super easy and fast to use. By FAR the quickest gel manicure I have ever been able to do.
And my polish has not budged at all since I applied it. No chips, no scratches, no peeling.
Granted, it has only been 3 days, so I will need to update this blog post once I find out how long it really lasts. But so far so good.
I purchased the Enrollment Kit primarily with the goal of just trying it out for the best price, but I am so impressed that I have decided to stick around as an Independent Distributor.
I was also impressed enough to order the professional lamp and several more colors. I really want to see how quick a whole manicure will be with that one!
